Museums of architecture and design

The architecture museum is located in the Helsinki designer district, where the pearls of Finnish architecture from different centuries are represented. In the adjacent building is the museum of design, where you can find interesting household items that belonged to Finnish houses from centuries past and present.

Speaking about the architecture of Finland, it’s extremely important to mention the most famous architect, Alvar Aalto and his masterpiece – the Sugar Cube (Sokeripala). The building is situated close to Market Square and is now the headquarters of manufacturer Stora Enso. It’s notable that local residents nominated the building as the most unpopular building in the capital because of its incompatibility with the architecture of the Katajanokka Peninsula.

Modern Scandinavian architecture advocates the usage of numerous natural resources and forms that merge our environment. The Allas complex, which is located near the Sugar Cube, is one of the brightest examples of this environmental-type architecture. The building itself has a unique airflow system and the sea pool and saunas are built on a pontoon located in the nearby sea.

The creativity of Finnish architects combined with Japan acoustic-professionals became one of the main unusual design solutions for the concert hall “Musiikkitalo”.  Thanks to the usage of proper materials and an insightful layout, the main concert hall remains a vinery and has fantastic acoustics. The concert hall has become quite popular among local residents. Along with the main concert hall, there are some convenient smaller halls, where people can enjoy concerts on a regular basis absolutely for free!

If you ask Finnish people what they like more than Scandinavian design, the answer will be pretty simple – saunas. For sure, the relationship of two main trends couldn’t be any more apparent in the country with saunas appearing at a rate of one sauna per one person. As a result, the favorite place for locals is Löyly, a fashionable city sauna, combined with a bar, a summer disco and restaurant, and an observation deck with a sea view was created.
